NSK’s customers rely on physical cards to estimate tool wear, a system vulnerable to loss, inconsistency, and human-error.


We were tasked with creating a mobile solution that delivers:

  • Auto-identification of the scaler tips
  • Real-time wear detection
  • Consistent measurement outputs
  • High usability for dental professionals
  • Scalable support for multiple tips and languages

We helped design and develop a mobile scanning app that brings millimetre-level precision to dental drill wear detection - eliminating guesswork and elevating clinical confidence.

We trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to recognise specific scaler tip models from camera input, automatically matching them to reference profiles and triggering the correct wear-detection logic, with no manual selection required.

At its core, the NSK app is powered by a custom-trained neural network built to interpret wear levels with precision, delivering actionable outcomes in seconds.

The CNN model was trained on high-resolution tip images across multiple variants, allowing the system to classify the correct tip type within milliseconds and apply the correct measurement logic. This ensures scalable support for NSK’s growing catalogue of scaler tips.
